Lasting Friendships from the Soccer Field…Time Will Tell

Sharing is caring!

They say friends come into your life for a season, a reason, or a lifetime. And all are very real, regardless of the time they spend in your life. I certainly have had all of these types of friends. But this isn’t about me.

I’ve written before about how my son’s travel soccer coach really made the kids into a team in My Life as a Sports Mom. An “I have your back” group of kids. A group of kids that have gone their separate ways to separate teams and different schools, and yet many of them are still close friends.  Many of the parents became very good friends as well…some of those friendships are still among my closest today, over ten years later.

One family moved to Germany, and then on to Canada. They came home the first summer they were away for a visit, and then not again till this year. They came through to town to check on their house, which they are renting. We gathered as many of the old team as we could for a quick four hour visit before they headed down South to visit more family and friends.

Lasting Friendships: Time will Tell

It was like these boys had never been apart. Six boys sat around a patio table and talked for well over an hour, ignoring the fact that there was a pool ten feet away.

My youngest, who is four years younger, was also really excited to see his brother’s old friend. He keeps in touch with him too.

The friend convinced his parents to let him stay with us and another family for most of the week…we will put him on a plane on Thursday morning. The boys had signed up to play in a 3 v 3 soccer tournament this past weekend for fun…they quickly added their friend’s name to the roster. It was just like old times.

As I was sitting on the sidelines watching the game with their coach (the boys coached themselves in the tournament), I wondered aloud if they will hang out together with their wives when they are older the way so many of us parents from that old team still do? And you know what…it wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Time will tell.

What a wonderful bond! I have a feeling they will be friends for a long, long time. I met one of my best friends when we were in Girl Scouts together in first grade! Our kids are now older than when we met. Crazy!

That's awesome! I have a friend from 4th grade and another from 7th. But we moved quite a bit and I didn't stay in touch with too many people! I really hope these boys remain friends for a long time to come!! I really think they will!

I love that they were able to reconnect like that! I'm like that some of my friends I made in Girl Scouts. Those relationships are lifelong!

What a great connection these boys have! I can only hope mine will make those types of friends when they get out on that soccer field as well!

I'm sure they will! All of my kids have some wonderful old friends from their "way back when" teams!

It seems that your son definitely has that true connection with his friend. I would bet that yes, they'll be hanging out together, watching their own kids play soccer someday. It's interesting to see how my son interacts with different friends. It's easy to see which friendships are the real deal. My husband is still close with three friends he met when he was 13. We get together with them every three months. Even the best of friendships make take a hiatus for awhile, but somehow, they always reconnect.

You're right, it is easy to see which friendships are the real deal. I'm just amazed that so many of them have remained such good friends! It's been wonderful to watch!

Friendships like theirs is what I always wished for. Having good friends in your life, even if it's years in between you all seeing each other, is one of life's best blessings. I sure hope that they stay forever connected. Imagine the stories they'll have!
