Tis the Season to be Thankful

Sharing is caring!

Every year around this time of year, I find myself reflecting on all that I have to be thankful for.

This year has had it’s shares of ups and downs. But whenever I find myself feeling like complaining, I try to remember that I have many things to be grateful for…particularly the gift of life.

Every day is truly a gift. I think we forget that sometimes. We forget to live each day to the fullest, because we always expect there to be a tomorrow.

Gift of Life quote

But we shouldn’t take the tomorrows for granted.

I was recently asked if I would share a story with you. It’s a story of about thankfulness and hope and valuing every single moment. As soon as I watched Heather’s video and read her story, I knew I had to share it. I hope you will take a moment to listen to her story.

Heather is a survivor of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Her diagnosis came right after giving birth to her daughter. She was given 15 months to live. 15 months.

Can you imagine the heartache you would feel if you were told you would be saying goodbye to your family in 15 months time?

Can you imagine the pain of knowing you won’t see your children grow up, get married, and have children of their own?

Heather fought for her life…and she is now an 8 year survivor! “With hope, the odds don’t matter.” These words are on the front page of Heather’s website, and they are very true. They are words that cancer patients and anyone fighting a difficult diagnosis need to hear. Please share Heather’s story and help keep that hope alive for everyone who needs it!

Heather’s diagnosis was during the holiday season, and she has made it her mission to spread the mission of gratitude with her own “30 days of Thankfulness.” In Heather’s husband Cameron’s note to me, he asked me if I would be willing to share what I am thankful for.

I am thankful for many things, but I am particularly thankful that a guardian angel was watching over my husband yesterday.

We had a snowstorm here, but he had to travel for work. He was driving home midday, when his truck fishtailed. As he was trying to correct it, he was hit by a tractor trailer. The driver’s side door is completely caved in to literally an inch from the steering wheel, and his window came crashing in. There is no glass left. Miraculously, he escaped with only a cut on his thumb. He shouldn’t have walked away from this unscathed. But he did. And for that, I am thankful.

Do you find yourself reflecting on the good in life during the holiday season? What are you thankful for?

With another year coming to an end I find myself really reflecting on the past year's journey - how far I've come, how I'm still the same, my blessings, my shortcomings. This year has really been an amazing year for me. I like how you recognize that you all shouldn't have walked away unscathed from the accident. That's where faith and gratefulness come from. Good stuff.

He...and we...were very VERY lucky! I have no doubt in my mind that he had a guardian angel watching over him that day.

Even when there isn't a crushed door as evidence, that any of us make it home in one piece is a minor miracle in itself. The photo defies logic, and gives us that tangible evidence of a higher power we so often wish for - but I'd rather have harp music or an on-demand thunder clap as evidence instead of a mangled car a loved one was sitting in, you know?

I know we're all grateful your husband is fine, and that you are, too, after your fall.

The door is dented in to within an inch of the steering wheel...I am amazed he escaped without injury. He must have had a guardian angel watching out for him that day, and for that I am beyond grateful! Sometimes there is just no explanation.

michelle, i am so relieved that your husband is ok. that picture of the car's destruction made my heart sink. heather's story is so inspiring: to live with courage and hope versus despair. we do have so much to be grateful for.

When I saw the truck, I was stunned. The door is dented in to within an inch of the steering wheel. I am amazed that he wasn't hurt! And so grateful!! Heather's story is incredible...hearing it makes you realize that each day truly is a gift!

Oh my goodness! That would be so scary to hear about a wreck. It must have been emotional seeing the car too. So glad he was okay.
