5 Tips to Make the Most of a Blog Commenting Challenge

This week I am participating in a blog commenting challenge with the SITS Girls. Although I comment on a lot of blogs, this is the first time I have participated in something of this scale. As I was commenting and responding today, a few things struck me. Whether you’re participating in a challenge or just using blog commenting as a strategy to build a tribe or grow your community, you really need to put your commenting to work for you.

5 quick tips to make the most of your blog commenting:

Don’t just leave a generic comment.

If the blogger’s latest post doesn’t “speak” to you, look through their older posts and find one that does. If you’re leaving a comment, make it a genuine one.

Comment on more than one post if you find a blog you really like.

In a challenge like the one I am doing now, I only have to comment on one post. However, going over and above on a blog you really like goes a long way towards establishing a connection.

Connect on social media.

Blogging is about building relationships. Leaving a comment is nice, but unless you’ve done something else to create a connection, chances are the comment you just left will be a dead end. If you do follow on social media, let the person know you did so with a quick note.

Share.

Share a post you like on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or Pinterest. If you are sharing on Twitter, Facebook or Google+, make sure you tag the person. Include why you enjoyed the post.

Subscribe to the blogs you really like.

This gives you another chance to connect going forward. In the fast and furious pace of a challenge, people may be rushing through and may not remember which blogs they really liked. Most bloggers have a way to subscribe on their blog. I use bloglovin. Even if a blogger isn’t set up on bloglovin, I can still subscribe to them by simply typing their URL into the search section.

I agree! In particular, I use your tip about finding a topic that resonates with you, even if the most recent one doesn't. It helps prevent not leaving a generic comment like, "Great post!"

I used to feel like I had to comment on every single blog, but now I make use of my time and really only comment where I feel like I have something substantial to say. I feel more genuine to myself and the blogger, and if it means not leaving any comments then I guess that's how it is. It'll force people to create quality content, and it won't feel fake to me leaving a comment just to comment.

So just for kicks, I will leave this with... "Great post!" lol

Excellent tips! I sure did try to leave thoughtful comments. I hope I did. Like you suggested, I did go through older posts to see what else I liked and could comment on. I love doing that anyway and of course, I had feedly open to save all the blogs that spoke to me.

Hello Michelle,

Great tips here, honestly I have never taken it to the next level of the relationship and connected with the authors, usually I just speak my mind, click the back button, and continue my Google search. This post changed me :) Happy to have found your blog!

I read this post just before I started the challenge and it was a great help! That challenge was hard core! I, unfortunately, didn't stick to the schedule so I had a lot of catching up to do on Saturday. And that also meant that I neglected the blogs that I visit regularly because I just didn't have the time to fit everyone in. It was a fun exercise, but I don't think I'll be doing it again. Thanks for the advice!
