Our children often learn how to manage money from us.  They watch what we do and say…and more than likely, when it comes time to make their own decisions, they follow in our footsteps, for good or bad. 

In the past, my husband and I have on occasion given our kids mixed messages when it comes to money. There have been times when we’ve talked about the fact that we really couldn’t afford to do something, and we’ve done it anyway. We’ve pulled out the credit card when we really shouldn’t have. 

These days we’re trying to be more thoughtful about our financial decisions.

We have three teenagers in the house, and our oldest will be headed off to college next fall. We want them to go out into the world with good money management skills and an understanding of what it means to be fiscally responsible. 

We’ve talked to our oldest about the cost of college, and the fact that the cost to attend is definitely a factor to keep in mind when choosing a school. We’ve discussed how much we’ll be contributing, and he knows that he’ll be footing some of the bill himself. Once he comes down to his final decision, he’ll have to take into account how much debt he’ll accumulate to attend the school of his choice. Certainly we don’t want him to make his choice based on money alone, but we want it to be a serious consideration.

We’ve also allowed all of our children to get their own ATM cards. I had my reservations about that (and visions of them blowing their money especially since our bank is walking distance from our home), but it’s been a good thing. They all earn some of their own money, and having an ATM card gives them the freedom to manage it. Even our 13 year old has done well with it. Because they have access to their own funds, they rarely ask me for money now. But they do weigh things much more carefully now that they are spending their own money. 

Teaching the kids budgeting and how to live within their means is one thing. But teaching them how to accumulate wealth is just as important.

Throughout the game, I was tight on cash, but I was more willing to take risks, probably because in the game, I had no children to worry about…it was just me. I discovered my youngest son is more risk adverse, weighing out each option with deep thought. The nice thing about the CASHFLOW board game is that you CAN try out different strategies. If you’re a saver in real life, you might want to try more aggressive investing. If you tend to take a lot of risks with your money, you might want to see how it feels to try slow growth instead. It’s a great learning experience, and you’ll acquire new accounting, finance and investment skills…all while having a good time!
