7 Ways to Keep Blogging When Life Gets Overwhelming

With the deadline of this article looming over my head, my only thought was that I don’t have time to complete everything else on my daily “to-do” list let alone set aside time to write one more blog post.  My brain is fried.  My energy is drained.  My motivation is kaput.  And then it hit me, if I’m feeling this way, then there are probably times when you feel it too.  Today I’m going to share what helps get me though the times when life is overwhelming and I still want to blog regularly, but the ultimate goal is for you to interact and share your best practices and tips.

I work a full time job outside of the home, manage my home and family, manage three rental properties, manage a business and blog, run breast awareness campaigns, and Hubby and I just opened an eBay store.  On any given day, balls are juggled and balls are dropped.  But when anything extra is added onto my already busy plate, then I want to hide from life and take a nap!  We all have our crazy lives, this just happens to be mine.

How do I keep it all together and still manage to keep a consistent blog schedule?  Here are my seven best practices that you can think about and implement too.

7 Ways to Keep Blogging When Life Gets Overwhelming

  1. Create a stockpile of blog posts.  This is easier said than done, and requires some upfront planning.  Wouldn’t it be great if you had blog posts written a week ahead of schedule?  A month ahead of schedule?  The time to plan and get ahead is now.  Not when you wish you had more time.
  2. Ask for help. Do you have a bloggy buddy or someone in your tribe who can guest post for you?  While publishing a guest post still takes some time and effort, it isn’t near the amount of time as it is to draft a post yourself from scratch.
  3. Look back to last year. Is there a seasonal-appropriate post that you can resurrect?  Make some minor updates to the pictures and text, keep the URL the same and re-post it.
  4. Post a round-up of your previous work. Take recent and/or older posts and organize them in a new way.
  5. Post a round-up of other blogger’s work. Be sure to give appropriate credit when you cite other blogger’s posts.
  6. Reevaluate your schedule.  Can you publish three posts a week instead of four?  Or two instead of three?  Trust me when I say that as much as your readers are hitting refresh on their computers waiting for your next post to appear… no one will miss one less post a week.  They will love your work in whatever dose you give it to them.
  7. If you need to take a temporary step back, do it. Let your loyal readers know that you are taking a break, and entirely up to you if you wish to get into the details why.  The world will keep spinning.  Your health and your family are always going to be more important than blogging.  Keep it real and keep it in perspective.

Great post! I'll be sharing this to my niece who considers blogging after graduating in college. She'll be learning a lot from this. Thanks!

First of all, the fact that you keep up with all of those commitments is amazing. You have some wonderful ideas here, and I will definitely be using some of them.

Excellent post, Holly. I'm going through it for some time already and I pretty much used up all my resources. I'll see what is left for the next weeks. I may need to cry for help. #turnituptuesday

Some great advice here, thank you. I'm always aspiring to have a month's worth of blog posts lined up but I never seem to get there! Loved the idea of rounding up older posts :)
