Doggy Cam Anyone?

You’ve heard of nanny cams, right? I think I need a doggy one. Our three dogs go for a run every single day with either my husband or my husband and I in the woods and grass fields across from our house. This area is relatively quiet…some deer on occasion, and of course squirrels and chipmunks.

Doggie Cam Anyone?

The dogs have their routines on our runs. They usually race ahead and wait, race ahead and wait. One dog likes to take shortcuts. But since the grass fields are right next to each other, she cuts through the bushes to meet us on the other side of the field and instead of running all the way around the fields, she wanders up through the middle. But you can’t leave her home! Oh no. She loves her run, even though she doesn’t always want to actually run.

Every once in a while she disappears on a jaunt. She doesn’t pull this often, but she does do it every now and then. It’s almost like she decides she wants some alone time…or perhaps she’s like a teenager rebelling trying to get more freedom? On these occasions, she conveniently ignores our calls. She always comes home, sometimes in a short amount of time…other times it’s hours. Yesterday she pulled her little stunt while running with my husband, and it was hours before she decided to come home.

I was not happy….I’m a nervous dog mama when she pulls her disappearing act. Usually I’m working from home so I can just watch out the front window for her. When I came home from my own run, she was hanging out in back of the house and came bounding over, prancing. It was like a little happy dance. It’s like she’s thinking to herself “If I pretend nothing happened and act like I’m really happy to see her, maybe she’ll forget that I stayed out for hours past when I was supposed to be home!”

I’d love to know where she goes when she does this. Does she take a nap in the leaves? Chase squirrels? Enjoy a leisurely stroll by herself? Or does she have a friend she doesn’t want us to know about? Inquiring minds in this household would like to know! I’d love to plant a little camera on her collar and see what she is doing during these “adventures.”

Thankfully one adventure was enough for the week for her though. Right now she’s lounging on the couch, sound asleep.

Does anyone else have a dog that pulls a disappearing act once in a while? Do you know where he/she goes?

your dog sounds like me. she's an introvert who just wants some alone time! she's like 'geez, i can't shake these humans!'

LOL She definitely likes her alone time. She sleeps in the basement at night and then come up in the morning to sneak on the bed and "whack" us awake. Then she sleeps on our the bed or the couch most of the day.

I love your graphic for this piece, so funny! I have always wondered about the secret life of pets. Have you ever seen the kids show Arthur, every know and then they have an episode where the dog and baby talk, and it's hysterical! Thanks for a fun post!

Thanks Kathy! My kids used to watch Arthur ages ago...I don't think I ever saw that episode! But I talk to the animals all the time! I think they understand more than we give them credit for. Sometimes I say to the puppy "can you behave while I'm gone?" and he runs into the crate! I never know with him! He likes to be busy.

My Smalll Dog's doggy cam (if she had one) would be the most boring movie in the world! She rarely leaves my sight. When I'm not home, I think she just sits quietly on the couch and waits for me. (Or maybe that's just what she WANTS me to think! Maybe a doggy cam isn't such a bad idea!)

I think they are busier than we think. Some days it seems like its been quiet around the house when I get home and other days I come home to havoc!

I've had dogs in the past but they were all indoor pets. I will say that the dog I had from 10 - 22 (Tippi, a poodle) would wiggle her way out and run off whenever she could. However, all you had to do was drive through the subdivision and call out her name. She loved car rides and would happily get in for one. Maybe she was just tricking us into a car ride!

That's cute! All of our dogs love car rides too. I picked up my son from school the other day and the dog I brought with me climbed into his lap for the ride home...a 50 pound lab. It was cute.

Haha that is too funny! Your silly puppy. We don't have open areas like that where I live, so my dog never has that chance to wander alone. I do wonder what she and the cats does when we are at work. Do they just sleep? Do they play with each other? It would be so funny to watch what they do when we aren't looking!

I have a feeling it would be quite interesting to see. I just walked upstairs to see what the racket was one of our cats was making and he has literally ripped a paperback book to shreds. I have no idea why. And he just looked at me like "What are you looking at?"
