Tag You’re It — Christmas Style 2013

Do you think about the little things that make the holiday special? What your traditions are? What you look forward to? Lanaya over at Raising Reagan started this fun Q & A Tag You’re It — Christmas Style, and Janine from Janine’s Confessions of a Mommyaholic tagged me. What a fun way to start the holiday! Many thanks to Lanaya and Janine…I am happy to join in the party!

What do you love most about Christmas time?

Definitely relaxing family time! I am horrible not very good about relaxing, and our family’s schedule is always so hectic throughout the year. This is one of the few times of the year that we just hang out and spend time with all of us together. We watch movies, play games, cook really yummy meals, and usually we ski as well, although last year we spent Christmas at the beach!

Do you celebrate the holiday in style or is Bah-Humbug for you?

I don’t deck the halls. The last few Christmas holidays we have traveled, so we haven’t really decorated the house because of that. Last year my brother in law was stationed in Hawaii, so we spent Christmas there with his family, and the year before we spent the holiday in Whistler with my family. We have also spent a couple Christmases in Vermont at our ski condo. That was our plan this year as well, but we ended up having to come home early this year, so we’ll be celebrating Christmas at home now this year.

Are you leaving anything out for Santa Claus this year so he remembers to leave you presents?

I remember those days with such fond memories. Cookies for Santa and carrot sticks for the reindeer! The kids are all older now so we don’t do that anymore, but it was such a fun tradition when they were little!

What is the one gift you are looking most forward to GIVING? (It can be to your kids, another family member, etc — remember to be discreet if they read your blog!)

One of my children had a gift request that my husband and I weren’t particularly fond of, but this particular child doesn’t really ask for much, and didn’t really have anything else on his list. I broke down last week and bought it. He thinks there is no chance of getting this gift so it will be fun to see the look on his face!

What is your all time favorite Christmas movie?

I would have to say Elf. Will Ferrell is hysterical in this…although what movie isn’t he hysterical. We could watch this movie all year long!

What is your all time favorite Christmas song?

I don’t think I really have one. I enjoy most Christmas music…it makes me feel nostalgic.

If given the opportunity would you participate in an Ugly Sweater party and what sweater would you wear? Peruse the internet or even your own closet and show us!

I’m going to say Bah-Humbug to the ugly sweaters! My daughter recently bought two at a consignment shop because apparently it’s a thing to wear these ugly Christmas sweaters to school, and they are absolutely hideous. I don’t really like dressing up for Halloween either.

Have you created any Christmas traditions this year that you plan on carrying forward?

We really don’t have any traditions. We have family all over the country and we tend to do something different every year at Christmas so it makes it hard to have a tradition that stays consistent year to year. The one thing that does seem to be a constant every year is we do lobsters on Christmas Eve, pretty much no matter where we are. I must say I am truly looking forward to those!

It’s Christmas morning — what does it look like outside where you live?

We always are hoping for a white Christmas! It doesn’t look like we’re getting one this year. 🙁 Boo to all the rain we’ve had in the Northeast over the past few days that washed our snow away!

You just found yourself standing under the mistletoe — who comes up to give you a kiss first?

Definitely my hubby!

The most wonderful time of the year?

This is not part of the Q & A, but I’m feeling a little bit blue right now, and I need to shake this off. The holiday season is supposed to be joyful and happy. It seems like this month there has been a black cloud hanging over our family. I’m not wishing the holiday season away, but it seems like everything that could go wrong has gone wrong lately. If you’re a regular here, you probably read my recent posts about why this hasn’t been my month or my husband’s major car accident. I was looking forward to a little quiet time in Vermont, where we’d planned to spend the holiday. But it was not to be. Soon after arriving, we got a phone call from our daughter, who was traveling with her grandparents, saying she had passed out at the airport. Then the first day into our trip our youngest fractured his wrist snowboarding. The poor kid was devastated, not because he was in so much pain, but because he thought he was ruining our Christmas. We had to come home early to see the orthopedic doctor, and the minivan bucked the whole way…we were nervous we weren’t going to make it. We just dropped it off at the repair shop. I’m crossing my fingers that it’s not something too major. Getting out of the van, my camera bag fell out onto the pavement, after being re-packed into a different part of the car next to the sliding door unbeknownst to me, breaking my most expensive lens and the one I use for all of my sports photography. I’m trying hard not to think about that right now, because it’s a “thing” not a person. But it is my favorite hobby…something I truly enjoy. Right now, I am not feeling that most “wonderful time of the year” feeling. But I do feel better just writing all of this down. And I am going to try not to let all of this spoil the holidays, and think instead about all the wonderful things that have happened this year as well, because there have been many of those as well.

I am so far behind on my blog reading and while I'm happy to read your tag with all the wonderful answers, I am sorry to hear about the black cloud. I know this happens to all of us from time to time and it stinks out loud. I hope with all of my heart by the time this comment finds you that things have calmed a bit and you are beginning to come out of the blues. Take care and here's to a happier, healthy 2014!

Aw, Michelle, I'm sorry it's been such a rough month! I hope Christmas itself ended up being better than the rest of the month has been.

I am a definite NO on the ugly sweaters, it is Summer here so that is my excuse. Thanks for your honest share, so much of this time of year we only hear about the highlights and for anyone having a tough run this can be difficult. You are primed for an amazing Christmas next year, it is often through contrast we are able to squeeze enjoyment from the more simpler things. I am sure a peaceful, healthy, tragedy free Christmas is in store. Enjoy your brief rest and see you in 2014.

OMG I am terrible - I have NEVER seen ELF but I know that it's everyone's favorite movies!!!! I need to see this in the new year, would it be depressing to watch it in January when the holidays are officially over? LOL!

Merry XMAS!!

Wow, Michelle, you have had quite a run this past month, yes? All I can say is that I hope you got it all over with and that it's done...for now, I'm glad that everyone is mostly OK.

I think it's great that you broke down and got your son the gift that you weren't thrilled with getting him. Sometimes, those are the gifts that mean the most to our kids, because it's that thing they really want the most - or they know it meant you got behind something for them, even if you were't behind it yourself, if that makes any sense.

Wishing you a merry Christmas and an awesome 2014. xo
