When you look around your house, do you see your memories? I love using photos to decorate…to me, they make our house a home! One thing I have always wanted to do is create an entire wall of photos…and then I discovered I can, beautifully and easily…and much more cost effectively than framing an entire wall of photos! Introducing WeMontage, repositionable photo wallpaper!

WeMontage

When I first met James Oliver Jr., the owner of WeMontage, on Twitter, he was in the midst of creating a startup that made removable photo wallpaper. Natually, I was intrigued. If you’re a regular here, you know how much I love photos as a way to tell the stories of our lives!

We clicked immediately. James is a down to earth guy, easy to talk to, and he has a very cool product! He’s also the father of a new baby boy and girl…twins! In fact, when I first started talking to James, he was a brand new dad. I give him a lot of credit for starting a new company at such a chaotic and stressful time…and you’ll understand just how stressful of a time it was for James and his wife when you read the post he wrote for Steamfeed, Entrepreneurs must have a supportive spouse when launching a startup.

When James asked me if I would try out his software for a test, of course I said yes. My background is in marketing and product management, and I cannot resist products like this! When I tested the software, James was very willing to hear my feedback. He then offered me the chance to make my own WeMontage for free, which of course I happily accepted. I created a WeMontage collage of our beach pictures in Hawaii for our mudroom wall. We are in and out of that room all summer as it opens up to our pool area — a great place for our beach memories!!

I found the software easy to use. You can load photos from your computer, Google Drive, Facebook, Instagram, and Dropbox. For the fastest file upload, you will want to save your photos to Dropbox and upload from there. You can set up a free Dropbox account if you don’t already have one.

When making your collage, the software arranges your pictures for you, “shuffling” them to the most optimal arrangement based on size and quality of the picture. This is how the software avoids the problem of pixelated photos, which can happen when you place a picture in a spot that is too big for it. My photo file sizes are large though, and I would have liked to have had a little more control in arranging my pictures. I did suggest to James that it would be nice to have the opportunity to swap pictures between slots once they are arranged. This is going to be coming in a future version! However, quite honestly, after shuffling my pictures several times, I did get an arrangement I was pretty happy with, and that is what I printed!  The WeMontage I created was 6 ft x 4 ft, but you can make them in larger custom sizes with as many pictures as you want. Pricing is simple to calculate — $10 per square foot.

This is how it looks on our mudroom wall! Below is the actual printed photo wallpaper, close up.

When my husband and I went to put ours up, we let go of one end and an entire section got stuck to another part of it. Can I tell you that we immediately panicked! We were so scared we were going to rip it while trying to pull it apart, or at least leave a “bent” mark where it had attached. But we were pleasantly surprised to find that not only was it no problem pulling it apart (we did work slowly), but that you can’t even tell that it happened. Not only does it adhere to the wall quite nicely, but it’s also very easily removed…we had to readjust it and had no problem doing so. (It even sticks to textured walls!) Maybe you’re thinking that we just had to reposition it…we didn’t really “move” it. But I have a sample piece that James sent me that I’ve been playing with for months, and moving around to different spots in my kitchen as a test. I can tell you you will be able to move it if you need to! And it will not damage your walls either!

I can think of so many places in my home that I would love to have a large photo collage like this! What better way to enjoy your memories and decorate your home beautifully at the same time! Family vacations, weddings, or just pictures of everyday life are great options to use when creating a WeMontage! James recently shared a picture of one he created to decorate his children’s nursery. Isn’t it beautiful?! And aren’t his children gorgeous?!

I was intrigued when I saw your Facebook Update on this post as I love anything with photos. I have a gigantic gallery wall in my family room and am a fan of decorating with photos in one place, rather than small frames scattered around the house. This is a lovely idea and I'll bookmark it for future use. I have to think exactly where I can do this. I saw something like this on an old Novogratz HGTV show in which they wallpapered a basement rec room for the kids and loved it then but didn't have a source. Thanks for sharing!

We have photos all over our home, but I am like you, I like groupings. Besides the one in this post, I have also made one using my son's soccer photos for his room and I just finished a very large one of skiing photos for our ski condo. We have a huge wall that was begging for something like this. Right now it has a large framed picture on the wall, but that can be moved. I'm excited to create more of a gallery look on that wall. I'll be putting it up next weekend. I also made one for a client as a Christmas present for his son (sports photos) and I am planning to make one as a graduation gift. If I can get my act together, I hope to do it this weekend and take advantage of the discount. I wonder if the show you saw was the inspiration for James' company...he saw the idea of HGTV as well I believe and couldn't find a source, so decided to start WeMontage!

Instead of hanging pictures ...wallpaper. This is unique.

And, wow - $10/square foot for custom wallpaper. That's a steal! (As compared to wallpaper at anthropology).
